String Quartet at the Detroit Institute of Arts

Rivera Court is a skylit interior courtyard wrapped on four walls by Diego Rivera's Detroit Industry Murals, twenty-seven frescoes finished in 1933. Getting married under those murals is a singular thing, and playing under them demands that the music not compete with the walls. It is a different kind of assignment.

Two rooms, one building

The DIA's Paul Philippe Cret building opened in 1927 on Woodward Avenue, an acknowledged masterpiece of Beaux-Arts museum design. Two rooms host weddings. Rivera Court seats 160 for a plated dinner and accommodates 250 for a strolling reception, beneath Rivera's Detroit Industry Murals and the central skylight. The Walter B. Ford Great Hall, located directly adjacent to the Woodward Avenue entrance and Rivera Court, seats up to 300 for plated dinners and 500 for strolling receptions.

These are two very different assignments. Rivera Court is intimate despite its scale because the frescoes pull focus toward the walls; the ceremony happens at the center, with Rivera watching. The Great Hall is more classically grand, with coffered ceilings and a longer, axial geometry.

The museum's events operation is tight. Every vendor routing, every clearance from artwork, every load-in window is specified in advance. Musicians who have worked the Nelson-Atkins or the Art Institute will recognize the protocols.

Project String Quartet is founded by Rebecca Hamilton, a conservatory-trained violinist. The full roster plays classical repertoire alongside Bridgerton-style pop arrangements, so your processional can move from Bach to Taylor Swift without a change of gear. We have played 500+ weddings across the Detroit metro and hold a 5.0 rating on Google. If you are still weighing live music against other options, our string quartet vs. DJ guide lays out the trade-offs plainly.

What Rivera Court actually asks of us

The room is a stone box

Rivera Court is a stone courtyard with a glass skylight and four mural walls. Reverb is long. Processional tempos come down noticeably, phrase endings stay short, and legato lines get extra space between them. The goal is that the music supports the ceremony without pulling any attention away from what is painted on the walls.

Eight feet off the murals

Museum protocol requires vendor equipment to stay a specified distance off the artwork. We set up on the east side of Rivera Court with a defined clearance to the murals, and we pre-walk the placement with DIA events staff during the site visit. Nothing goes up near the Rivera frescoes that has not been approved on paper.

Great Hall is longer than wide

For Great Hall ceremonies, the narrow axial geometry means setup angle matters more than room position. We place the quartet at the north end under the coffered ceiling, angled slightly toward the aisle, so that the cello has a reflective wall behind it and sightlines to the officiant stay clean for photography from the back of the hall. Quartet is the standard

String Duo

Violin + Cello

Appropriate for a small Kresge Court cocktail hour or an intimate private-dining event. Not our recommendation for Rivera Court or the Great Hall.

Request Quote

String Trio

Violin, Violin + Cello

A workable option for Great Hall ceremonies at the smaller end (under 150 seated). Rivera Court consistently rewards the full quartet for the frescoes' sake alone.
