String Quartet at Discovery World

The Roger and Judy Smith Family Pilot House is a 360-degree circular ballroom wrapped in floor-to-ceiling glass, with an outdoor wraparound terrace above Lake Michigan. On any other lakefront this would be a once-in-a-lifetime view; here it happens to be the wedding room.

The Pilot House and the Pavilion

Discovery World's 120,000-square-foot science and technology center opened on Milwaukee's lakefront in 2006, and Bartolotta Catering runs all private events exclusively. Two primary wedding spaces. The Pilot House is a circular ballroom with 360-degree floor-to-ceiling windows onto downtown and Lake Michigan, seating 300 for dinner, 400 for cocktails, and up to 500 with the wraparound outdoor terrace included. The Pavilion is the larger option, over 9,000 square feet with capacity for 700 seated and up to 800 guests.

Across the lakefront sits the Milwaukee Art Museum and its Calatrava Burke Brise Soleil; directly south, Summerfest grounds. Guest logistics for a Discovery World wedding are the simplest in Milwaukee.

Project String Quartet is led by founder Rebecca Hamilton, a conservatory-trained violinist. The roster she leads has performed at 500+ Midwest weddings. The ensemble holds a 5.0 Google rating and carries the same full repertoire to Discovery World that it plays across Chicago, St. Louis, and Kansas City: classical processionals, Romantic interludes, and the Bridgerton-style pop arrangements that have become a signature at lakefront ceremonies. What a lakefront glass room demands

The Pilot House is circular

A 360-degree room has no solid wall to anchor the cello against, which is unusual. We set up at the interior entry point where there is a short section of non-glass wall, keeping the quartet near the ceremony focal point rather than trying to use the glass as a backdrop. The room is acoustically bright but short on reverb, so we play with slightly more sustain than we would in a historic ballroom.

Wraparound terrace brings weather

When the ceremony or cocktail hour spills onto the outdoor terrace, Lake Michigan wind is a constant factor. Weighted stands, sheet-music clips, and temperature-stable tuning are all essential. We retune between prelude and processional every time the terrace is in play, because lake humidity moves the strings noticeably between morning setup and early afternoon ceremony.

Pavilion is bigger

The 9,000-square-foot Pavilion behaves more like a conventional modern event space than the Pilot House, with taller ceilings and more absorptive surfaces. We set up along the long interior wall. At 700-to-800-guest capacity we recommend the Bartolotta AV team add light reinforcement through the house PA. String Trio

Violin, Violin + Cello

A solid fit for Pilot House ceremonies at smaller guest counts (under 200) and for terrace-focused events where sound needs to project without overwhelming the glass geometry.
