The Estate
The Grosse Pointe War Memorial occupies the 1910 Alger House on Lake Shore Drive, designed by Charles A. Platt in the Italian Renaissance idiom and known originally as The Moorings. The three adjoining rooms of the historic house accommodate up to 125 seated across hand-carved moldings and grand stone fireplaces; the intimate count is closer to 70.
The newer Fred M. Alger Center holds the Crystal Ballroom, a redesigned lakefront space seating over 300 guests with panoramic Lake St. Clair views through floor-to-ceiling windows. Capacity scales up to 600 when adjacent rooms are combined. Formal gardens and the lakefront terrace handle outdoor ceremonies.

Two Venues In One
The three adjoining rooms of the historic mansion are warm, reverberant at small scale, and visually dense with original 1910 carved moldings and stone fireplaces. A duo or trio fits cleanly, especially for the sixty-to-seventy guest counts the house actually holds. A full quartet can feel crowded in the smaller rooms.
The redesigned Alger Center ballroom is a different building, with floor-to-ceiling windows facing Lake St. Clair and a neutral acoustic that rewards projection. We position the cello against the solid interior wall rather than the glass so reflections do not stack toward the lake side of the room.
Outdoor ceremonies on the lakefront terrace and formal gardens are reliably breezier than inland venues; weighted stands and sheet music clips are essential. Lake humidity also pulls string tuning off between the walkthrough and the prelude, so we retune right before the processional, not earlier.
