Moshe Safdie designed the Kauffman Center, Yasuhisa Toyota tuned the acoustics (the same partnership behind the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles), and the building opened in 2011 on a hill at the south edge of downtown Kansas City. Inside: the 1,600-seat Helzberg Hall, the 1,800-seat Muriel Kauffman Theatre, and a four-story glass curtain wall lobby that frames the KC skyline. That lobby is the Brandmeyer Great Hall, the wedding room.
The Great Hall seats up to 450 for dinner and holds up to 1,000 for a cocktail reception. Helzberg Hall itself can host an on-stage dinner for 100. The outdoor green space, paved drives, and courtyards surrounding the lobby fold in naturally for cocktail hour during warm months. Because the Center is first a performance venue and second an event space, wedding dates thread between symphony and opera schedules. The payoff: the room is built to flatter acoustic strings, without any help from amplification.
Project String Quartet is led by founder Rebecca Hamilton, a conservatory-trained violinist. Every musician on every booking holds a degree from a conservatory or university music program. The ensemble has performed at 500+ weddings across the Midwest and holds a 5.0 rating on Google. The repertoire spans classical standards to Bridgerton-style pop arrangements of Taylor Swift, Coldplay, and current chart favorites, so the music fits the building without sounding like it came from a different century. If you are still weighing options, the guide to choosing a wedding string quartet and the best Kansas City wedding venues for live music are both worth a read before you book.
For couples planning other parts of the day, the playlist builder lets you map out processional, recessional, and cocktail hour songs in one place. Corporate and gala clients at the Kauffman can find ensemble options on the corporate events page.
