String Quartet at the Minneapolis Institute of Art

The Regis Fountain Court has held wedding photographs on its list of most-photographed views for a decade, and the Target Wing's Michael Graves-designed reception hall, barrel-vaulted ceiling and maple paneling, has built its own reputation for dinner. Two entirely different rooms in one of the largest encyclopedic art museums in the Midwest.

McKim Mead and White, Tange, Graves

Mia opened in 1915 in a neoclassical building by McKim, Mead and White (the firm also responsible for the Boston Public Library). Kenzo Tange added a modernist wing in 1974; Michael Graves followed with the Target Wing in 2006. That layering of three architectural generations in one building is itself part of the wedding experience here, depending on which room the ceremony lives in.

For weddings, the second-floor corridor space includes the Regis Fountain Court (with the Bruce B. Dayton Rotunda nearby), an atrium with a central fountain and skylight that doubles as the dance floor at most receptions, lit pink with spotlights. The Target Wing reception hall is the more contemporary option: barrel-vaulted ceiling, maple paneling, a serene palette suited to plated dinners. Events over 300 attendees require additional security staffing.

Project String Quartet is led by founder Rebecca Hamilton, a conservatory-trained violinist who has performed at 200+ Midwest weddings with a 5.0 Google rating. The ensemble's repertoire runs from Bach to Bridgerton-style pop arrangements: think Taylor Swift and Coldplay alongside Pachelbel and Vivaldi. Two atmospheres, one museum protocol

Fountain Court with the fountain running

The central fountain is both a visual signature and an acoustic presence. Water sound is surprisingly complementary to sustained string lines, but we position slightly off-axis from the fountain itself so attacks on quicker passages read clearly. We set up at the east end against the solid reflective wall, with the aisle framed toward the main entrance.

Target Wing reception hall

The barrel-vaulted maple-paneled reception hall has a warmer, more absorptive acoustic than the Fountain Court, maple does a lot of absorbing. We play standard tempos with slightly more sustain here; the room is forgiving in a way the stone atrium is not.

Grand staircase photography window

Couples consistently use the grand staircase for photographs between ceremony and cocktail. We position the quartet's teardown path so that post-ceremony photography has clean access to the staircase without the ensemble moving gear through the shot.

Trio for Fountain Court, quartet for Target

String Duo

Violin + Cello

Fits a private side-gallery ceremony or an intimate Villa Rosa dinner. Not enough ensemble for the Fountain Court or the Target Wing at typical scale.

String Quartet

2 Violins + Viola + Cello

The right choice for full Fountain Court weddings (200+) or Target Wing receptions. Four-voice density reads especially well in the Target hall's warm maple acoustics and handles the Fountain Court scale when it runs wider.
