String Quartet at Nicollet Island Pavilion

Built in 1893 as the William Bros Boiler and Manufacturing Company, a working foundry on an island in the middle of the Mississippi. The Park Board bought it in 1976 and turned it into a wedding venue. Exposed brick, tall industrial ceilings, and the best view of the Minneapolis bridges and skyline anyone has ever had to work with.

Industrial scale, riverfront geography

The pavilion's original 1893 industrial shell survives: exposed brick, tall ceilings, timber structure. The Minneapolis Park Board acquired it in 1976, restored it, and Mintahoe Catering and Events now runs the wedding operation. The main room holds 525 for a seated event and up to 750 theater-style. With the attached tent area, total capacity rises to 700-plus seated, and standing capacity reaches the 5,000 mark for the largest events.

The geography is the feature. Nicollet Island sits in the middle of the Mississippi River between downtown Minneapolis and the north side, with views across the water to the Stone Arch Bridge and the downtown skyline. Access is via the Nicollet Island bridge. Most downtown hotels are a five-minute drive; guests staying in the Mill District or North Loop can walk.

Project String Quartet is founded by Rebecca Hamilton, a conservatory-trained violinist who sets the standard for every booking. The Minneapolis roster has performed 200-plus weddings across the metro, and the ensemble holds a 5.0 Google rating. For couples who want classical alongside modern pop, PSQ's Bridgerton-style string arrangements of Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, and current chart hits are consistently among the most-requested additions at riverfront ceremonies like this one. Full room softens the 1893 brick

The room changes when guests arrive

Empty, the pavilion's brick walls and tall ceilings make it a bright, reverberant room. Full, with 500 guests, linens, florals, and a reception build, it softens considerably. We play slightly projected during prelude when the room is half-empty and pull back after guests arrive; we set up at the short end of the building opposite the head table, using the brick wall as a natural projection shell.

Tent-to-main-room sound transition

For weddings that use the attached tent, sound transitions cleanly between the two spaces through the open doors. If the ceremony straddles both (say, indoor processional walking to an outdoor vow exchange), we position to cover both rooms rather than committing to one.

River-side outdoor ceremonies

A subset of couples hold the ceremony outdoors on the riverfront lawn adjacent to the pavilion. The Mississippi produces ambient water sound that blends cleanly into sustained string lines. We sit with the river behind the guests so the quartet projects across the lawn rather than getting lost in the current.

Industrial scale asks for a quartet

String Duo

Violin + Cello

Not a match for the pavilion's main-room scale. A duo might work for a small riverfront lawn ceremony under 50 guests, nothing larger.

Request Quote

String Trio

Violin, Violin + Cello

Works for smaller ceremonies (under 200 guests) in the pavilion or on the lawn. The full room at typical wedding counts consistently leans toward the quartet.

Send the date, your guest count, and whether the tent and outdoor lawn are part of your plan. The acoustic answer changes a lot between a tented 700-person event and a main-room-only 400-person ceremony.
