String Quartet at Piper Palm House

The Victorian glass conservatory in Tower Grove Park is our home venue. We know the light, the acoustics, and where to set the quartet so every guest hears the music. Bach in the morning, Billie Eilish at cocktails, Bridgerton-style during the recessional, all of it sounds right here.

About Piper Palm House

Piper Palm House is an 1878 Victorian glass conservatory set inside Tower Grove Park, one of the oldest public parks in America and a National Historic Landmark. The building was restored in 2002 by the Piper family and is now operated as an event venue by Tower Grove Park.

Originally built as a showcase for tropical plants, the structure's 19-foot glass dome, cast-iron columns, and limestone floors create acoustics that suit string instruments exceptionally well. The room is reverberant without being boomy, every phrase from the cello lands cleanly, and violin lines carry to the back of the room without amplification.

The house seats about 120 for a ceremony and 100 for a seated dinner, with a surrounding terrace used for cocktail hour in warm months. Couples pair the conservatory with ceremony sites elsewhere in Tower Grove Park, most often the Ruins or the Gaddy Bird Garden, and return to Piper for cocktails and dinner.

Project String Quartet is founded by Rebecca Hamilton, a conservatory-trained violinist who has performed at Piper Palm House more than any other ensemble in the St. Louis market. The group holds a 5.0 Google rating across 200+ Midwest weddings, and brings the same Bridgerton-style pop arrangements and classical repertoire that earned that reputation to every Tower Grove Park event.

String Quartet Logistics at Piper Palm House

What we've learned from playing this venue dozens of times.

Setup Position

For ceremonies inside the conservatory, we set up diagonally from the aisle near the north wall. This gives the cello a solid reflective surface behind it, keeps instruments out of direct sunlight through the glass, and preserves clean sightlines for the wedding photographer.

Outdoor Backup

Tower Grove Park ceremonies move indoors quickly in rain. We stage instruments in the Palm House during prelude and relocate in under five minutes if weather shifts, no sound check required because we've pre-balanced both rooms. Read more about planning ceremony music logistics.

Cocktail Transition

After the ceremony, we move to the terrace or main hall for cocktails. The glass walls mean sound carries beautifully in either direction, so guests hear the music during both seated dinner prelude and the transition to DJ. Not sure whether to choose a string quartet or DJ for parts of the evening? See our string quartet vs. DJ guide.
