String Quartet at The Brown Hotel

J. Graham Brown put up four million dollars in 1923 and the sixteen-story hotel went up in ten months. A hundred years later the Crystal Ballroom still carries the five original chandeliers and the plaster relief ceiling that Queen Marie of Romania sat under in 1926, gold throne, red carpet, full ceremony. Weddings at The Brown have continued in roughly the same room ever since.

A century of Louisville weddings

The Brown opened October 25, 1923, at Fourth and Broadway. Sixteen stories, concrete and steel, English Renaissance styling throughout. The hotel has been hosting Louisville's major social affairs every year since, with only the 1970s-era decline and the subsequent 1980s restoration interrupting the continuity.

The Crystal Ballroom is the wedding room. Ceremony capacity runs up to 350 in theater-style seating, reception capacity up to 300 at seated rounds. The five original 1923 crystal chandeliers still hang, the plaster relief ceiling carries touches of pale pink, cream, and blue, and the proportions have not been changed. Queen Marie was the first queen to be received here; the guest list has continued in that direction since.

The Roof Garden on the top floor is a rare open-air option for downtown Louisville, and the English Grill and lobby bar handle smaller-scale events.

Project String Quartet is led by founder Rebecca Hamilton, a conservatory-trained violinist whose ensemble has performed at more than 500 weddings across the Louisville area and the wider Midwest. The group holds a 5.0 Google rating across those events. Alongside the classical canon, the quartet plays Bridgerton-style pop arrangements that work particularly well for Crystal Ballroom processionals where couples want something recognizable without surrendering the ceremony's tone. If you're still deciding on music, the guide to choosing a wedding string quartet walks through every practical question.

Notes on the Crystal Ballroom

The plaster does the work

The 1923 plaster relief ceiling and ornate cornice softens the reverb you would expect in a room of this height. We can play standard processional tempos here, unlike in stone-box ballrooms of the same era that force us to slow down. The cello sits naturally against the head-table-end wall with the chandelier centered overhead.

Roof Garden weather planning

The 16th-floor Roof Garden is a true rooftop, so wind is a factor even on calm days. Weighted stands, sheet music clips, and an early decision on the rain-backup room (usually the Mezzanine Lobby) are all part of the pre-day planning. We relocate in under five minutes when the weather call flips.

Lobby Bar cocktail hour

The main lobby bar has a natural acoustic sweet spot at the base of the mezzanine stairs where sound rises into the upper lobby without competing with bar conversation. We relocate here during cocktail hour when the ceremony happens upstairs in the Crystal Ballroom, which keeps live music running across the whole evening.
