String Quartet at the Indiana Roof Ballroom

A 30-foot domed ceiling painted as a blue night sky with a crescent moon, stucco facades of a Spanish village along the walls, and original hardwood in the middle of it all. The Indiana Roof opened in 1927 as an atmospheric ballroom, a theatrical genre that barely survives anywhere else, and getting married here is genuinely unlike getting married in any other room in the country.

A sixth-floor Spanish courtyard

The Indiana Roof opened in September 1927 on the top floor of the Indiana Theatre Building as a one-hundred-thousand-dollar ballroom in the "atmospheric" theatrical style, meant to feel like a Spanish courtyard open to the sky. Authentic stucco facades, red-tile roofs above them, a 30-foot domed ceiling painted as a twilight sky with floating clouds, drifting stars, and a shimmering crescent moon. During the big-band era this was the room Glenn Miller and the touring orchestras played.

The ballroom accommodates 150 to 1,500 guests depending on format. Ceremonies and receptions both live here; the original hardwood is still the floor. An elevator ride up from street level is part of the arrival experience, which most guests remember as the moment the sky appears overhead.

The acoustic is shaped by the dome and the hardwood floor: large, reverberant, and slightly bright. It rewards density and penalizes thin textures. Project String Quartet founder Rebecca Hamilton has played under domed ceilings across the Indianapolis market and coaches every player on adjusting articulation for the room before the prelude begins. Our playlist builder includes the 1920s Gatsby-era repertoire couples most often request here, alongside the Bridgerton-style pop arrangements that have become the ceremony standard across the Midwest. With a 5.0 Google rating across 200-plus Midwest wedding ceremonies, we know how to make the dome work for you, not against you. Three things the building asks for

Dome equals reverb tail

The 30-foot painted dome holds onto reverb longer than a flat-ceilinged ballroom of the same square footage would. Processional tempos pull back, phrase endings stay clipped, legato lines get space to resolve before the next note starts. The room does a lot of the sustain for us if we let it.

Sixth-floor load-in

The ballroom is on the sixth floor of the Indiana Theatre Building. One service elevator handles vendor load-in. We arrive ninety minutes ahead of prelude because four instruments plus stands plus the usual kit take real time to move up, and tuning in the actual room matters more here than in most venues.

Big-band reception shares the stage

A lot of Indiana Roof weddings build their reception around a full band, which is historically accurate to how the room was used in the 1930s. We coordinate with the band's advance team before the day, share risers where possible, and handle the ceremony from the same stage footprint they will use later.

String Duo

Violin + Cello

Not a fit for the Indiana Roof at any realistic headcount. The room's volume of air swallows two voices.

String Trio

Violin, Violin + Cello

Possible at the lower end of the capacity range (under 200 guests). The viola helps, but the dome still prefers four voices for the top line to stay distinct.
