String Quartet at the Landmark Center

A 1902 federal courthouse and post office, the site of the 1930s gangster trials, empty and nearly demolished by 1965, rescued by a small citizens' campaign in the late 1960s, and reopened as a cultural center in 1978. The Musser Cortile atrium is the central wedding space, and it is one of the few ceremony rooms in the country with a certifiable Prohibition-era courtroom pedigree.

A 1902 building still holding civic life

The Landmark Center was built in 1902 in the Richardsonian Romanesque style as the Federal Court House and Post Office for the Upper Midwest. During the 1930s it hosted the gangster trials the building is still associated with locally. By 1965 it stood empty and was threatened with demolition until a small coalition of St. Paul citizens organized to preserve it; the building was added to the National Register in 1969 and renovation took through 1978 to complete. It is owned by Ramsey County and managed by the nonprofit Minnesota Landmarks.

For weddings, the Musser Cortile Atrium holds up to 320 seated and serves most ceremonies and receptions. The Ramsey County Courtroom holds 125 and is the period-detail alternative. Smaller restored courtrooms handle intimate ceremonies. Total building capacity across combined spaces ranges from 20 to 1,000 guests.

Project String Quartet is led by founder Rebecca Hamilton, a conservatory-trained violinist whose ensembles have performed at more than 200 Midwest weddings. The group holds a 5.0 Google rating and plays everything from baroque processionals to Bridgerton-style pop arrangements alongside the classical repertoire. If you are weighing live music options, our string quartet vs. DJ guide covers the tradeoffs honestly. Playing a five-story marble atrium

Reverb is the first consideration

The Musser Cortile has marble floors, stone walls, and five stories of open air beneath a glass skylight. Reverb is long. Processional tempos slow noticeably, phrase endings stay short, sustained notes get more space to breathe. The room rewards discipline; players who push tempos here get their own reverb back stacked on top of the next phrase.

Upper-balcony cocktail hour

Cocktail hours frequently relocate to the second- or third-floor balconies overlooking the Cortile. When they do we split the ensemble: a duo or trio goes upstairs to play into the atrium, sound cascades down to guests in the courtyard below. The effect, heard from the ground floor, is uncanny.

Courtroom ceremonies are drier

Upper-floor restored courtrooms (Ramsey County and the smaller lodge-room courtrooms) have much tighter acoustics than the Cortile, wood paneling absorbs what the atrium marble amplifies. We play standard tempos and full dynamic range here without the Cortile's constraints.
