String Quartet at The Pfister Hotel

Built for over a million dollars in 1893, by current count more than six thousand weddings have happened here, and the Imperial and Rouge ballrooms still carry the same chandeliers that hung at the hotel's opening. The Pfister has had more practice at this than almost any hotel in the country.

A Victorian landmark that kept its ballrooms

Charles and Guido Pfister opened the Pfister Hotel in 1893 on East Wisconsin Avenue as Milwaukee's Gilded Age flagship. The Romanesque Revival exterior, the marble lobby, and what is considered the largest Victorian art collection in any hotel in the world have been there continuously for 130 years. Two of the three ballrooms, the Imperial and the Rouge, are original to 1893 and retain their original chandeliers and decorative plasterwork.

The Grand Ballroom holds up to 600 guests. The Imperial Ballroom carries 32-foot ceilings with panoramic downtown views and seats up to 300. The Rouge is the intimate counterpart for smaller ceremonies. Three-hundred-and-seven guest rooms live above the ballroom floor, which makes hotel-based weddings and the logistics of out-of-town guest blocks very clean.

Project String Quartet founder Rebecca Hamilton is conservatory-trained, as are all PSQ musicians. The group has played 500+ weddings across the Milwaukee area and the wider Midwest, and holds a 5.0 Google rating. The repertoire runs from classical processionals through the Bridgerton-style pop arrangements that have become a signature of the group. Playing rooms the Pfisters built in the 1890s

Imperial Ballroom under the 32-foot ceiling

The Imperial's thirty-two-foot ceiling adds real reverb, and the ornate plaster helps scatter it rather than stacking reflections back on the quartet. We set up with the cello against the wall opposite the windows to keep glass reflections from the panoramic-view side from doubling back, and we play standard tempos with slightly clipped phrase endings.

Grand Ballroom at full capacity

Six hundred guests in the Grand Ballroom is a different animal than three hundred in the Imperial. We set up under the chandelier nearest the main entrance, which anchors sound toward the aisle; at max capacity we recommend the hotel AV team add light reinforcement through the house PA for the ceremony.

Blu for 23rd-floor cocktail hour

The Pfister's Blu lounge on the 23rd floor is a popular cocktail-hour space with downtown skyline views. When couples add Blu to the evening, we split the package: full quartet for ceremony, duo or trio relocated upstairs for cocktails, because the lounge scale is too intimate for four voices.

Quartet for ballroom, split for Blu

String Duo

Violin + Cello

Fits Blu for cocktail hour, or a smaller Rouge Ballroom rehearsal dinner. The Imperial and Grand ballrooms are both too tall for a duo.

String Trio

Violin, Violin + Cello

Works for Imperial Ballroom ceremonies at under 200 guests and for most Rouge Ballroom events. Sometimes paired with a full quartet as a Blu cocktail-hour subset.
