String Quartet at Villa Terrace

After their 1915 wedding trip to Italy, Lloyd and Agnes Smith hired Milwaukee-born architect David Adler to build them a 16th-century Northern Italian villa on the bluff over Lake Michigan. The result, completed in 1923, is now the Villa Terrace Decorative Arts Museum, with 15th-to-18th-century European pieces in the rooms and weddings in the Mercury Courtyard.

A 16th-century idea, built in 1923

David Adler's 1923 commission for the Smith family is a faithful Northern Italian Renaissance villa: red tile roof, stucco exterior, wrought iron, a central Mercury Courtyard with a fountain, and a Loggia opening onto terraced gardens descending toward Lake Michigan. The 15th-to-18th-century European decorative arts collection is the museum's permanent holding. It's one of the most distinct Milwaukee wedding venues for live music.

For weddings, three principal spaces. The Smith Family Ballroom seats up to 200 and holds up to 250 standing. The Loggia and Mercury Courtyard together typically seat 150 to 180 for dinner. The Renaissance Garden descends in tiers toward the lakefront with a central water staircase, a dramatic outdoor ceremony option. Rentals come in 3-hour (ceremony only) or 9-hour (full-day) formats. See our complete guide to wedding ceremony music if you're still planning which moments to fill with live strings.

Project String Quartet is led by founder Rebecca Hamilton, a conservatory-trained violinist. The full roster shares that background, which matters when a couple wants Bridgerton-style pop arrangements alongside Pachelbel and Vivaldi in the same ceremony. PSQ holds a 5.0 Google rating across 200+ Midwest weddings, including many at venues along the Lake Michigan shore.

Stone courtyard, tiered garden, villa interior

Mercury Courtyard under the loggia

We set up under the Loggia on the east side of the courtyard. The stone arches act as a natural projection shell, and the central fountain's water sound blends cleanly into sustained string lines, more than most ambient noises do. The courtyard itself is moderately reverberant (stone walls, open top) which flatters a trio at its typical 150-to-180 dinner count.

Renaissance Garden on the bluff

For lakefront ceremonies on the terraced Renaissance Garden, we sit at the top of the water staircase with the villa behind us as an acoustic backstop. Lake wind is genuinely an issue here, stands get weighted, sheet music gets clipped, and tempos stay firm to keep the processional pacing tight against the breeze. Browse the full repertoire list to pick processional and recessional pieces that hold together at tempo outdoors.

Smith Family Ballroom is manageable

The interior Smith Family Ballroom at 200-guest capacity comfortably holds a trio, and handles a full quartet if the couple wants film-score repertoire or fuller sound. The smaller salons are tight for anything larger than a duo. Use the playlist builder to map out your cocktail hour and dinner sets before you book.

String Duo

Violin + Cello

Fits the interior salons for an intimate dinner or a fifty-guest ceremony. Outdoor spaces need more.

String Quartet

2 Violins + Viola + Cello

The step up for full-capacity Smith Family Ballroom receptions or for couples using the Renaissance Garden at large scale. The villa interior is too tight for a comfortable quartet setup otherwise.
