About Winnetka Community House

The Winnetka Community House was founded in 1911 to provide educational, cultural, and recreational programming for North Shore residents. The historic building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007 and continues to operate as a community center, with weddings and private events staged across its main hall and garden spaces.

Wedding spaces include Matz Hall (the primary indoor reception room, up to 185 seated), the Garden Room (75–200 guests depending on setup), and the outdoor Garden (200 seated for a ceremony, 150 seated with a dance floor for a reception). Combinations of indoor and outdoor spaces are common.

Winnetka sits 20 miles north of downtown Chicago, with Metra access on the Union Pacific North line. The Community House's scale and community orientation give it a warmer, more unfussy atmosphere than a hotel ballroom.

Project String Quartet founder Rebecca Hamilton and our conservatory-trained musicians have played 500+ weddings across the Midwest, including many North Shore weddings. We hold a 5.0 Google rating across those events. Alongside classical ceremony music, we bring Bridgerton-style pop arrangements that fit the historic setting without feeling out of place. See our full music list or use the playlist builder to map out your ceremony songs.

String Quartet Logistics at Winnetka Community House

Playing a 1911 North Shore community landmark.

Matz Hall Setup

Matz Hall has moderate reverb and a balanced room tone. We set up against the short wall opposite the entrance, which gives the cello a solid reflective surface and aligns sightlines down the aisle.

Outdoor Garden Ceremony

The outdoor Garden is open to North Shore wind off the lake. We secure stands, position the quartet against the building wall for a natural backdrop, and play with slightly firmer projection than an indoor ceremony.

Garden Room Cocktails

The Garden Room connects to the outdoor Garden through glass doors. We relocate during cocktail hour and play where both spaces share sound through the open doors, guests indoors and outdoors hear the quartet continuously.
